Tuesday 5 November
Like most folks - hate being second!! A case of so near and yet so far away! (Still - it is better than eighth I suppose)!!! Smart Exit was the third Fences farm runner in the last 10 days to fill that spot in Plumpton yesterday. SE has always had the makings of a far better chaser than hurdler, even though he managed to win over the smaller obstacles. Yesterday, for his seasonal debut he was fitted with cheek pieces to help him travel slightly better. he is not a quirky beast - he is just a bit polite, and the headgear was applied to 'focus' his mind. They did the trick, he travelled the sweetest he has ever gone, and jumped really well for his only second start over fences. Unfortunately the one that he made a mess of, was the one that cost him the race. Jamie asked for a big one at the second last, and SE thought it was a bit too long, so tried to pop in a shorty. He chested the fence, and did really well to stand up, but despite trying very hard, could not muster another challenge on the run to the line. Jamie felt that he had hit the front too soon, so we will wait a little longer with him next time, where hopefully he will get his head in front!! He seems fine this morning, and has earned a couple of days off! Still a share for sale in him - so get in touch 07909 518902. Colebrooke has an entry in Market Rasen on Sunday. Another who we are keen to try over hurdles - he needs to put on a better show than last time where he pulled up, which is extremely annoying as he seems to be in the best form of his life at home. All his form would suggest that adopting aggressive tactics in smaller fields suits him best, so, although he isn't the biggest, chasing should suit him!!
