San Telm made his eagerly awaited chase debut yesterday in Uttoxeter - and it hardly went to plan. He had his trip and ground, and had been in great form at home. The only difference yesterday were the big black fences in front of him, but he had schooled very well at home and we didn't think they were a problem - a big run was expected! It didn't happen. ST never travelled from flag fall, with Josh saying that he just didn't let himself down all the way round. The one thing that ST always does is travel, he has gears, but not yesterday. His jumping was sound in the main, if a little big, and we were thinking after the race, in which he finished a very poor eighth (last) that he just hadn't taken to fences. We left Uttoxeter disappointed and a little bemused. When Stuart arrived home he quickly realised all was not 100% with San Telm, and that he was suffering with a bout of colic. A coincidence, as Warren Greatrex's horse in his race had been withdrawn as he was showing signs of colic in the paddock. The vet was called and he was given a thorough examination, with the team at one stage looking at a trip to Newmarket, and San Telm having an emergency operation. I am pleased to say that was not the case and a drench and constant walking through the night appear to have alleviated that threat. The vet is back in today. It certainly explains his poor run, and the fact that he never let himself down, so we will put a line through the run and move on. Our thanks go out to Stuart and his staff who's excellent management and vigilance seem to have averted a very serious situation! Colebrooke today in Fontwell, hopefully he can get back on track - he has also schooled well. Maypole Lass makes her hurdling debut tomorrow for new owner Ben Turner. Paddy Brennan rides and she has done everything right at home. A nice introduction is hoped for, and then onwards and upwards for her.
