Jimmy Gatz - is in training with Olly Murphy, beaten just 5 lengths in a decent Carlisle bumper on debut - with the promise of plenty more to come.
. The Grey Gatsby is a horse I adored when he was racing, and I have been very impressed by his progeny, who have shown themselves to be good, strong, robust and well built horses, with a tough and hardy attitude to life. It is these qualities that have led us to buy this gorgeous yearling colt from the Somerville Yearling Sale in Newmarket.
Progeny of The Grey Gatsby tend to come into their own as 3 yr olds, so this horse, being a big, scopey individual, with plenty of growing and developing still do, was always unlikely to see the racecourse as a 2 yr old. The fact that he was being offered in an early yearling sale, which is usually full of handy, speedy 2 yr old types meant that he wasn’t going to be on everyone’s radar at the sale and we think we have got a bit of a bargain. As you can tell, we are looking at him as the perfect candidate for Bumpers and juvenile hurdles as a 4 year old.
The Grey Gatsby is the sire of recent impressive Newbury winner Fire Warning who cost £340,000 last year and is now quoted at 33/1 for the Supreme Novices Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.
After arriving from the sales in Newmarket in September 2023 he had a few weeks education with Jason Maguire at Ivy Lodge Farm, before being gelded and turned away for the winter.He came back in from the field and had six weeks of further education and has been inducted into a system that Jason and I have developed over the years to maximise the potential of these young horses when they reach the race track. Their initial grounding is so important and we have had great results managing our young stock in this way, with several of our graduates gaining black type in their first seasons.

This horse had several months in training in 2024 giving him a superb introduction to his future life as a racehorse before being turned away again to mature and strengthen. he has been with Olly Murphy since August, and as is his way with a horse of this quality, Olly has brought him on slowly, allowing him to develop as he learns his trade.
This was his first sight of an obstacle in front of him - it is fair to say he is a natural - he simply loves jumping!,
This is the perfect opportunity to get involved in a young horse, by a very exciting young stallion, that looks ideally suited to the programme that we have in place for him.
Here's a remnder of what James Bowen thought of him - he liked him enough to travel all the way to Carlisle for just the one ride, after riding him in a piece of work in Lambourn - this horse is a fine model, by a very good sire - who has plenty of ability!
He is available in 10% shares, priced at £3,500 each.
