Sunday 25 July

It has been a roasting week - with the mercury touching 30 degrees and more - and everyone unaccustomed to the temperatures, both humans and horses alike have made life slightly more bearable by getting their work done earlier in the mornings. Olly Murphy and Fergal O'Brien have been pulling out first lit at 5.00am if not before so that the bulk of the work is done by the time temperatures start to rise around 9.00am. So it meant an early start to see Auditoria at Warren Chase stables this week. Glorious morning - Auditoria looking in fine fettle, good to catch up with Olly, and also Aidan Coleman who had told me a couple of months ago that he was looking forward to riding her in a race for the first time. Olly is a young ambitious trainer, and when everything started to calm down in the spring, and horses headed out to grass, he embarked on a couple of major building projects to further enhance the facilities at the yard. A new 60x30m arena is in the final stages of construction, with just the surface to go down. This will be used as a warm up area, and a schooling facility for the young horses. He is also building a new all weather schooling strip alongside one of his existing gallops. It is good to see the level of investment going into the facilities, enhancing what is an already impressive set up. Blue Bikini and the Mamool gelding are in with Fergal O'Brien, and both gently cantering away. Both were gastroscoped this week, we know from last seasons experiences with Blue Bikini that she is prone to them, and so it proved once again - but the Ravenswell team now know where they are with them, and the steps, and management needed to get her in the best shape to race. Glad to report that the Mamool was clear. Queenohearts and Hidden Beauty have had another week on the roads with Jason Maguire, QOH having every resource thrown at her to get her back on track in the best shape possible. Volkovka enjoying the last few days of her holiday in the field and she will head back to her stable on August the first and start on the road back to full fitness with Maguire. Yauthym is also on the last few days of her break, and will be back in work very soon, freshened up after being in for a long time last season. Classic Ben and Go Millie go are both back at Fences Farm. The vet has prescribed a long slow journey back to full fitness for CB, after joint treatment in the spring. All stages of his pre training will be doubled in time, but he is expected to be back on the track towards the end if the year. Go Millie Go has been in for a few weeks, and like a few of the others will be cantering away. As well as an early morning at Olly Murphys this week, I have also been over to the Elms Stud a couple of times this week. On Wednesday it was good to get round and see all of the stock there. The summer has been kind to them, although grass growth was delayed in the spring due to a prolonged spell of cold overnight temperatures, it has been pretty much perfect conditions for a couple of months, and they have all had a good bit of grass to go at. The Camelot filly is looking fabulous - I can't quite believe how well she has done - and the difference in her from 2 to 3 is simply amazing - she has even grown and filled out her already sizeable frame since she went through the ring in Doncaster in May. Yesterday morning it was good to meet up with Damian and Michelle again and show them the horses. They have taken a share in a number of our syndicates, and Damian, who has had plenty of involvement in both Flat and National Hunt horses before is keen to get back into the action in a bigger way once again. We look forward to working with him in all aspects of the sport, from the bloodstock side of things with interests in foals and youngstock, to racing under both codes. Despite a very dodgy looking weather forecast, we managed to stay dry. Next week we will be around the country again looking at horses, and looking at the forecast, I've just put the wellies back in the boot of the car!
