We are thrilled to be able to add another quality horse to our squad for the 2025/26 season and beyond.

‘Finbar’ is a homebred gelding, by Falco out of Molly Childers. He is 3 years old, and being homebred, he has been in our ‘system’ all of his life – foaled at The Elms Stud – he was raised there, before heading down to the Cotswolds to the yard of Grand National winning jockey, Jason Maguire who breaks in all of our youngsters at 2 yrs old.

I purchased his dam Molly Childers in 2016 after she had finished second on her second start in an Irish point to point. A daughter of the mighty Stowaway, Molly Childers is one of seven siblings to race, three of them going on to gain valuable black type, she was a tough, hardy mare – who relished a battle, we kept her to bumpers in her first season, as we felt that she was capable of picking up some valuable black type in that sphere, but after finishing a close second on her first three runs for us she was caught out by the soft ground in her Listed Bumper in Sandown in March of 2017 finishing fifth.

Molly then headed over hurdles, where, after two more close seconds we upped her to 2m4f which saw her win easily on her handicap debut. After a fourth place finish in Cheltenham next time out the plan was to run her in the Listed 3 mile mares novice hurdle in Doncaster in early March – the only 3 mile mares novice hurdle with Listed status on the entire calendar. Sadly, this meeting was abandoned, and we didn’t get the chance to run her. The following season we headed over fences with her, and she proved equally consistent over the bigger obstacles, gaining her black type in a mares’ chase in Wincanton. Molly reached a rating of 132 over fences, reaching elite mares status, in total she ran in 25 races, winning 3 and finishing no less than 17 times in the first 3. She only finished outside the first 4 on 5 of her 25 starts – a tough, hardy and resilient mare that we were delighted to have!

On her retirement the bulk of her syndicate chose to retain her and breed from her – ‘Finbar’ her first foal. As her first foal arrived late in the year, we decided not to cover Molly that year, and in the end, she was sold to one of the top National Hunt breeders in Ireland. She was sent to France to be covered by Jeu St Eloi, a mating that resulted in a colt foal that would go on to top day one of the Tattersalls November Sale in 2024 – fetching 58.000 Euros. This really is a very good National Hunt family, and ‘Finbar’ shows all the signs of following in the family tradition!

His sire Falco was a top class racehorse in France throughout his racing career. Bred by the Wertheimers, he was foaled in 2005, and ran twice as a two year old. He really hit the heights at three - making up into a supremely good miler, winning the French 2000 Guineas before being retired to stud. He is a successful sire under both codes, the sire of winners of Group 1 races on the flat and Grade 1 races over obstacles, including Hitman, Tahmuras and Peace And Co.

‘Finbar’ is typical of a first foal – he is not a tall horse, but is very well made, and with an outstandingly athletic walk. As he was breaking him in last year, Jason Maguire described him as being ‘like a deer’ – with a wonderfully loose walk and great athleticism through all of his paces.

As with all the horses that go through our ‘system’, Finbar got a very comprehensive education at that stage, he did a little bit of everything, including schooling over obstacles and cantering upsides, all things that will stand him in good stead for the future. He was a natural – and Jason was very happy with him – a good moving, well put together individual with a very tough and resilient attitude to life.

As ‘Finbar’ is not a huge 16.3hh horse, he will not take time to get to the track, having done all the work with him, (and being a supremely good judge) Jason sees him as being ideally suited to the Junior Bumpers and National Hunt Juvenile Hurdles through the 2025/26 season. Finbar is currently back at Maguire’s Ivy Lodge Farm, where he is having his 8-10 weeks of ‘secondary school’, after which he will have a short break back at grass. The plan is for him to go to Fergal O’Brien’s Ravenswell Farm in July, where he will be prepared for his debut in a bumper in October. If all goes well – we will plan an early season bumper campaign around a run in the Listed Bumper for 4 yr olds in Cheltenham on New Years Day, after which he will switch to hurdles.
