Golden Horn x Savingforvegas
Golden Horn x Savingforvegas
3yr old Bay Gelding
Trainer – Fergal O’Brien
The latest homebred that we are thrilled to offer for syndication.
From the moment he arrived on the planet, ‘George’ has always been a little bit special. He was a stunning foal – and developed beautifully at The Elms Stud where he was born.

As a 2yr old he transferred down to Jason Maguires, Ivy Lodge Farm where all our young horses head for their first taste of working life. This horse did something not far short of incredible – arriving on Tuesday July 15th, having lived his entire life in a field, having his feet trimmed once a month – he took to everything so very quickly that he left Maguire speechless! A mere 14 days after arriving at Ivy Lodge Farm, without seeing anything more than a head collar for his entire life, he was not only being ridden, but he was also cantering upsides on an away day at a local woodchip gallop! This young horse has the most fantastic attitude and work ethic!

2yr old 'George'
He hails from a fantastic family – one that we are very proud of. His Dam, Savingforvegas, has been simply outstanding for us since we purchased her for a client to race in May 2015.
Savingforvegas had won her Irish Point to Point in Tralee, beating a subsequent Listed Hurdle winner by 20 lengths. She went on to win a bumper and a novice hurdle in just three subsequent starts under rules before injury curtailed her career. In her final start over hurdles in Warwick, she beat two subsequent Listed Hurdle winners – just going to show what level of form she would have achieved had she not been injured.
A half-sister to Cheltenham Festival winner, Rathvinden, Listed Chase winner, Where It All Began and a host of other winners, Savingforvegas herself boasts a wonderful National Hunt pedigree, with the likes of The Big Breakaway, Kildisart and Say Goodbye featuring in her close family.
She has, to date produced 8 foals – 7 colts and 1 filly. Her first 4 foals have all made the track – and are all winners. Between them, they have won 8 races. Three of them have won bumpers on debut, and one has gone on to win two competitive flat handicaps. The pedigree is sure to only get better and better. Both of her bumper winning sons, Old Blue Eyes and Nevada Samba are very highly regarded by their trainers who both believe they are capable of competing at Pattern level, adding valuable black type to an already stunning pedigree!
His Sire, Golden Horn needs no introduction, a World Class Racehorse he was named Horse of the Year in 2015. He was the winner of 7 of his 9 starts, including the Derby, the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, The Eclipse and the Irish Champion Stakes.
Golden horn retired to stud in 2016, and has been a sensation in his new career, siring both Group 1 winners on the flat and Grade 1 winners over obstacles. His best progeny include Champion Hurdler, Golden Ace and Cheltenham Festival winner Poniros over jumps, and Group 1 stayer, Trawlerman on the flat.
‘George’ is a well grown, very well put together 3yr old, who has sailed through every part of his education with flying colours. Jason Maguire describes him as ‘Really nice’, and he is a horse that he likes a lot. He is currently going through his ‘Secondary School’ term with Jason, once again doing everything asked of him very easily indeed! After a short summer break, will head into training with Fergal O’Brien.

His 'Secondary School' term has gone extremely smoothly and very well. He has been away for several 'away day' work mornings and has gone very nicely. We know he has a very chilled out attitiude, and he has taken everything in his stride. He has been ridden in his work by Jason Maguire, who describes him as a 'Nice horse, who goes really well'
The final stage of this part of his career is schooling - and that has been plain sailing too - we now know he can gallop - and we can see that hurdling isn't an issue either - he's pretty smart at that too!

Fergal and I always like to have a well bred 3yr old on the team and target Junior National Hunt Flat Races in the autumn. Every year we target the valuable, Listed 4yr old Bumper in Cheltenham on New Years Day, and this horse has had this race as his target for the past couple of years.
