Back To Normal

A drop of rain this weekend - snow for some - but on the whole another dry week.

Monday morning and we all waited for news of Hidden Beauty - pulled up when strongly fancied for her second bumper run in Cheltenham the previous Saturday, she was found, post race to be suffering with a fibrillating heart. She was fine on Sunday, and when the vet checked her over on Monday he was happy that things were back to normal. At this stage it seems as though she has righted herself naturally and that she is back to normal - but she continue to be monitored closely, and we will see what the short term future holds.

A glorious morning on Tuesday - the perfect day for a walk around the Elms Stud, chance to catch up with Louise and discuss mating plans for Molly Childers and Savingforvegas. Molly will visit Jack Hobbs, and Savingforvegas will go to Golden Horn. The stock all looked really well and have enjoyed the mainly mild and dry winter up until now. The three year olds are all nominated to the sales that we think will suit them the best, and those inspections by the sales companies will commence this month. The younger stock are all developing really well, the two year old Muhtathir gelding and Jukebox Jury filly are both very nice indeed, and we are very lucky to have 'Frank' the 2 yr old gelding we bred by Blue Bresil - he will either be aimed at a sale next summer or we may even retain him and syndicate him.  Barry, the Blue Bresil colt out of Savingforvegas is a lovely individual, and his sire is certainly lighting up the national hunt world with Blue Lord and Constitution Hill both top class sons of his! His owners,The Denton Partnership who we got together before he was born, so that they could begin the jourmey with him right from the very start, have really hit the jackpot - he is a cracker. It was a fun morning, and good to catch up with Paul Wells who was there to see the horses that he both owns and has shares in.

On Thursday a new horse arrived with Jason Maguire for a new client - we wish him the best of luck with his new horse.

On Friday we were in with Olly Murphy. I left home in dry mild conditions - went through a monsoon about 2 minutes down the road, which then persisited as heavy rain, eventually turning to snow around Coventry. Not the nicest drive - but we got there, and thankfully when we did, it dried up, and in the end the sun came out - making it a beautiful morning. Olly's string look in great condition, with a real gleam to their coats. Auditoria was being her usual sassy self, - she is a mare that enjoys life, and her exuberance can make life difficult for her riders - she 's not nasty - we will just say she is very expressive, and it is not uncommon for her riders to suddenly go from sitting on her back to standing beside her as they warm up in the outdoor school. Ceris stayed on on Friday! It was a great morning, good to see Tintagel Queen do a couple of canters - she is looking fabulous and really going nicely in her work. In the next week we will be arranging a syndicate morning at Warren Chase, when people will be able to come and see her, and the others, and we will let all members know a date for that.

It was good to see Olympic Gold Medal eventer Laura Collett who goes into Warren Chase once a week to school the horses over the poles in the outdoor school. A chance to chat with her about her work with Queenohearts.

Saturday - another day and another yard. A far nicer journey down to the Cotswolds - dry, and traffic free - in with Fergal and the team early. It was another belter - a crisp, dry morning with plenty of sun, and good to meet up with clients both old and new. Really good to see David and Andy again - Andy and his father in law were NBR members a few years ago, and rejoined in the autumn. I always enjoy their company, and a pint or two of the black stuff when we meet up at Cheltenham. It was also good to see Johnny Bartlett who arrived armed with his 'signature dish' a masterpiece on reformed chocolate - a Rocky Road, that aways goes down a storm in the owners room! John was armed with his trusty camera - and is sure to have got some fabulous shots! Also paying a first visit were brothers James and Robert, with their friend Kieth - part of a group of lads from near to home here in Bedfordshire, who have all taken shares in Sunset Melody. They had a really enjoyable morning, topped off with a 'Royal Oak' breakfast!

With the sun shining it was the perfect morning to watch horses, and they were certainly glowing! Volkovka led the group, she has an entry in a mares handicap in Ludlow on Wednesday. Regular pilot Sam is really happy with her. Yauthym is also in great form, she has been off the track after picking up an infection after her last run in Hereford, but is back on song now, and has been entered in a mares handicap hurdle for conditional jockeys in Kempton on Friday - Liam Harrison who rode her to win on her last start will ride, and at this stage she is an intended runner. Sunset Melody came up the hill twice, and is in fine form. She is a hardy tough girl, and but for a respiratory infection over Christmas she would have run by now, but that kept her off games for a long time, but she is back going the right way and looks sure to get a run in the next few weeks. She has been given plenty of easy weeks, and targetted drugs, so that she can be got back to full fitness in as timely a manner as possible - the same applies to Blue Bikini who has also been laid low with the same thing. Trying to rush them back just results in them going backwards, or if they get to the track - a poor run - so they are given plenty of time to recover. Both of these mares are now back going the right way, and hopefully we will see Blue Bikini towards the end of the month when she will be stepped up in trip and into handicap company.

Mamoon Star looks amazing, and he will be entered for a Listed Bumper in Newbury next Saturday. We had toyed with the idea of running in a maiden bumper in Kempton on Friday, but he is a lovely young horse, with a jumpers pedigree, and this season in bumpers is a bit of a bonus. Having already finished third in the Listed bumper in Cheltenham on New Years Day, where he went into a lot of noteboooks as he flew up the home straight, his owners will get to enjoy another great day out at a top track. We also have the added bonus that as a 4 year old he will recieve a massive 12lbs from the olders horses in the race. The 2 mile trip would look to be perfect for him, and the track will suit. Four year olds have a very good record in the race - so we thought we would give it a go!

Hidden Beauty did a couple of canters and seemed non the worse for her recent problems. At this stage it just has to go down as one of those things, and we move forward.

The Soldier Of Fortune filly is really coming together - she joined Mamoon Star upsides on her second time up, and went really well. She has settled in great, and is another one that looks an excting addition to the squad!

Across the valley at Kim Baileys, Queenohearts is really well. she has come out of her race in superb order, and Kim is looking to run her again towards the end of the month. She will be given all the time she needs to get over her run in Lingfield, and we will soon be sitting down and looking at the options for her.

After the work was done at Ravenswell Farm John and I popped over to see the horse that arrived with Jason Maguire earlier in the week. Lots going on at Ivy Lodge Farm, with Jason always looking to improve the already top class facilities!

At Fences Farm, Go Millie Go has resumed light ridden exercise, and Classic Ben is well and very much on target for a crack at a marathon trip back at Exeter at the end of the month. Apart form a bit of stiffness after his unfortunate fall there the last day, he seems non the worse.

Entries next week in Ludlow on Wednesday - yard visits planned on Thursday, and further runners in Kempton and Newbury on Friday and Saturday, so it looks like being a fun week - hopefully a winner or two among them!
