Quite a surprise when I logged on to the BHA website yesterday to see what the handicapper thought of the performances of our horses over the course of the previous week. In fairness - there are not many for him to look at, with only the ones qualified for a handicap mark getting assessed or re-assessed - but the one that caught the eye was Molly Childers, who has been dropped a pound to 129 - this is the first time she has seen her mark drop since she won a hurdle on her handicap debut off of a mark of 109 just over 12 months ago! Don't get me wrong she has been the model of consistency in the intervening 12 months, registering 4 seconds, a third, a fourth and a sixth place - but it is still hard to think that a 129 rated mare has only won 1 race in her life, and yet, even with here drop of 1lb, is 20lbs higher than that sole winning effort. Hopefully she will get the winning thread again soon, although there is only one race against her own sex that she either qualifies for, or is in her class before Christmas. Also dropping a couple of pounds was Classic Ben who drops to a new mark of 130 - this will allow him to take a very slight class drop in his next race, if it is available, which can only be a help to him. Queenohearts was paid further compliments yesterday with the win of Shantung in Lingfield. Shantung was a facile winner of her second hurdle start, looking a lovely prospect - and surely has a nice future - but Shantung was beaten 31 lengths by our big mare in a Towcester Bumper late last year - so it is another indication of the level of ability that Queenohearts obviously possesses - and we can't wait to see her out again in December, where she will aim to add to her tally of Listed wins in a Haydock Novice Hurdle.
